The climate of Glengarriff is heavily influenced by its proximity to the Atlantic and the Gulf stream. The warm ocean currents tend to bring relatively mild weather to the south-west. Frost is rare. Rainfall averages between about 1,600 and 2,000 mm per annum. Strong winds are more frequent in winter than in summer.

Outdoor activities can be enjoyed without discomfort throughout the year. In fact, not many people living around Glengarriff own winter coats! You can easily spot people in T-shirts and shorts as late as November!

Rainfall in IrelandCome rain or come shine

The Irish weather has a wicked reputation. But how bad it is really? Well it does tend to rain frequently in Ireland, however all is not as bad as it seems. In fact the annual rainfall in most parts of Ireland isn't much higher than say for instance in the Netherlands or Germany.

The rain pattern however is typically Atlantic which means frequent short showers rather than days of continuous rain. Well actually, Ireland gets that too occasionally but mostly in fall and winter. Most rain falls in the northwest of the country and in higher parts.

The upside

The beauty of the Irish weather is that the frequent showers keep Ireland quite green without interfering too much with your daily life.

Due to the mild moist climate you will find lush subtropic vegetation all around Glengarriff. In fact the diversity here is of special interest to botanists. It is a true gardeners paradise! The number of days with more than 1 mm of rain averages around 175 in this part of the country.
